Your face is the first thing that people notice when they meet you. Your chin is one of the most important features of your face and if you are insecure about the size or shape of the chin, it is going to affect your confidence. Cosmetic chin surgery is an excellent option for anyone who feels that the size or shape of their chin is not in proportion to the rest of the face. Chin enhancement can be done either through facial implants for chin enlargement or advancement or through chin reduction surgery for those who would like their jaw to appear less prominent.
Chin augmentation helps to add proportion to the chin and provides balance to other facial features. It is usually done to balance the proportion of the face by making the chin longer or bigger compared to the nose. The size of the chin may magnify or minimize the size of the nose.
Chin implant is a surgery done to reshape or enhance the size of the chin.

What is the procedure?
Chin implant surgery is a very simple procedure. The surgery involves making an incision from inside the mouth or underneath the chin and a pocket is created above the chin bone and below the muscle in which to place the implant. The implant is then inserted, and the pocket is closed using fine stitches. Chin implant is done inserting an implant or by moving or reshaping bones.
The surgical cut will be secured with dissolvable stitches. A dressing will then be done to support the implant so as to reduce the risk of infection. It normally takes anywhere between 45 minutes and one hour. It is carried out under general anaesthetic.
After a chin implant, improvement is what you should look for rather than perfection.
Chin implant can be combined with a facelift, nose reshaping or any surgery related to the face to achieve a better facial balance. Surgery to correct bite problems can be done at the same time as chin surgery.
As will all surgical operations, have an in-depth discussion with your surgeon about the intended surgery, its related complications and your expectations about the desired results.
You should consider certain things before getting the implant done:
- Post surgery activities like sleeping arrangements
- How long will you stay away from work
- How long will it take the results to be visible
- How long will the results last
- Child care after the surgery
After the surgery, the stitches will be removed in 5 days. You may be asked to wear a brace while you are sleeping for 4 to 6 weeks. You will feel some discomfort and soreness. Consult your doctor regarding the pain medication you need to take. If the cut was made under the chin, the scar should not be noticeable. Most of the implants last for a lifetime.
But sometimes if the implants are made from bone or fat tissue that was taken from your body, chances are that it will be reabsorbed.
Because you may have some swelling for months, you might not see the final appearance of your chin and jaw for 3 to 4 months. The swelling will be gone by 6 weeks, depending on your surgery.
You may feel some numbness in your chin for up to 3 months or probably a stretching sensation around your chin for 1 week. You might have to take liquids or soft diet for at least a day or two.
You can resume light activity the day of surgery.
Patients are generally able to return to work within 5 days to 7 days after the chin implant surgery.
What will be the cost of the surgery?
There is no set price for chin implant surgery as it depends upon your procedure. The cost for the surgery may or may not include everything from the procedure, to the cost of your overnight stay and aftercare appointments. You should discuss all of these with your surgeon beforehand to get clarity.
Plastic surgery financing options are available and can make the procedure affordable for most budgets.
