What is Oculoplastic Surgery?
Oculoplasty or oculoplastic surgery involves a wide variety of surgical procedures that deal with the orbit (eye socket), eyelids, tear ducts, and the face. Blepharospasm: This condition causes excessive and involuntary eye blinks. It usually occurs due to aging. Blepharospasm is more commonly seen in women than in men.
Blepharospasm is believed to be caused when there is a lapse in coordination between the brain and the eye muscle. The patient may also experience spasms of the face and neck muscles. For some patients this may be a chronic condition while for others it may be just one episode of this condition. Several treatments are available to help control the spasm.
Dry Eye Syndrome: If the layer of tears that covers the cornea and conjunctica is of poor quality or insufficient amount of tears are being produced, it may cause the dry eye syndrome, which is also known as dysfunctional tear syndrome or keratitis.
Entropion and Ectropion: When the lower eyelid turns outward, it causes ectropion. When the lid turns inward, this is called Entropion.
When someone has Entropion, the eyelid skin and eyelashes rub against the eye. This leads to excessive tearing, mucous discharge as well as crusting of the eyelid. The patient may experience a general uncomfortable feeling that something is in the eye.
This condition can also affect vision. In ectropian, the lid moves away and outward from the eye and again, the eye tears. Surgery is helpful in correcting these malpositions of the eyelids.
Eyelid and orbit injuries: The eyelids and the bones of the orbit may be damaged by many types of trauma including accidents, fights, sports injuries, etc. Proper repair of the initial injuries as well as possible oculoplastic surgery play an important role in restoring the proper protective function and cosmetic appearance of the eyelids and orbital bones.
Droopy eyebrows: heavy or droopy eyebrows can cause sagging which places its weight on the upper eyelids. Brow lift surgery is performed to reposition the eyebrow and also to decrease the hanging skin in order. The surgery helps to improve one’s appearance and visual function. Surgery to lift the brow can be performed to help elevate the brow tissue. When it comes to brow lift, there are a number of surgical approaches available. This is sometimes combined with upper eyelid lifting (blepharoplasty) surgery to obtain the best result.
Eye tumors: Any type of abnormal tissue growth is considered a tumor. Tumors may be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Benign as well as malignant tumors can occur in the eye orbit area, eyelids or eye sockets.
Treatment is available for eye, eyelid and orbit tumors. If eye tumors run in your family, you should have regular eye examinations.
Bulging eyes: an abnormal growth or swelling behind the eyes may cause the eyes to bulge. This may cause a large portion of the white area of the eye to be exposed. The patient may have difficulty seeing and may have double vision or blurriness.
