Oculoplastic surgery

What is Oculoplastic surgery?

Diseases and disorders related to eyelids, eye sockets, and tear ducts are treated by Oculoplastic surgery. This surgery basically involves the cosmetic, corrective and reconstructive surgery of the eye and its surrounding structures.

Oculoplastic surgery is a super specialty which requires high degree of precision and skill. Very few surgeons in India are certified oculoplastic surgeons. Oculoplastic surgery is done on patients who have disorders or diseases related to eye orbit.

Who is an Oculoplastic surgeon?

Oculoplastic surgeons are trained ophthalmologists who specialize in plastic and reconstructive surgery of the periorbital and facial tissues including the eyelids, eyebrows, forehead, cheeks, orbit (bony cavity around the eye), and lacrimal (tear) system.

Some of the eye disorders treated by an Oculoplastic Surgeon in Jaipur:

Oculoplastic surgery can completely correct various eyelid disorders like eyelid malposition, droopy eyelids, excess fat on upper and lower eyelids.

Droopy eyelids
Ptosis is the medical term for droopy eyelids.  Droopy upper eyelids are caused when the skin around the eye starts hanging loose. It can cause a reduction in the vision when the eyelid obstructs the visual axis.

Children get ptosis at birth, while adults usually develop ptosis as a result of aging, prior surgery, or long term use of contact lens. There are innumerable methods of treating ptosis, but the treatment depends upon the type, degree and severity of ptosis. Recovery from ptosis surgery is usually quite rapid, and patients find themselves returning back to work within a few days.

Eyelid Malposition

The eyelids need to be healthy and in a normal position to ensure eye protection, good tear production and drainage and proper movement of eyelids when blinking. When the eyelids are malpositioned, they can be very detrimental to the health of the eyes. It can result in tearing, pain, and chronic discharge. Entropion is a condition in which the eyelid is turned in, towards the eye. Ectropion is a condition where the lower eyelid is turned out away from the eye. Both can be treatedwith surgical procedures which are aimed to return the eyelid to its natural position.

Eyelid Reconstruction
Trauma or tumor excision can cause injury to the eye and this is when eyelid reconstruction is required. Reconstruction can be performed using a variety of tissue flaps and grafts, but it majorly depends on the degree and location. Eyelid cancers are best removed surgically by a specially trained ophthalmologist, who will remove the tumor with minimum damage to the surrounding structures.

Eyelid Lesions
There are many types of eyelid lesions, which can be either malignant or benign. The treatment for lesion is usually started with a biopsy and the treatment plan is structured depending on the results of the biopsy. While treating a lesion many factors like the patient’s medical history, the location and type lesion etc. are considered before the beginning with the procedure. Some of the most common benign eyelid lesions are chalazion (stye), cysts, skin tags, and nevi (moles).

Bell’s Palsy
When the facial nerves start weakening, it leads to weakness on one side of the face. Eyelids and eye are usually affected depending on the severity of the weakness. One can experience problems in blinking and closing the eyelids that can result in irritation, pain, and a potential risk for infection. Surgical and non-surgical techniques are available to protect the eye and provide symptomatic relief and functional improvement.

Blocked tear duct

Tear ducts system normally drains tears from the surface of the eyes. Lacrimal surgery is the surgery which is done on the lacrimal or the tear duct system of the eyes.  Surgery may include the exploration and reconstruction of any portion of the system depending on the location of the closure (stenosis) or obstruction. The location will be determined at the initial consultation and the treatment plan is designed at that time. Treatment can be as simple as using eye drops, a minor procedure in the clinic, or may require surgery in the operating room.

Orbital Tumor
A variety of tumors can occur in the eye socket in both adults and children. Fortunately, orbital tumors are generally benign and can be treated completely.
